Antique mirror glass splashbacks

Over the last 12 months we have noticed a trend of enquiries and requests for antique mirror glass for use as splashbacks in kitchens.

This is something until now we have been a bit nervous about supplying as most of the products on the market are made from 4mm glass rather than our usual 6mm and none of them were toughened. Non toughened glass is not recommended behind a direct heat source because of the risk of the glass cracking under very high temperatures.

We looked at several ways of trying to create a mirror finish onto toughened glass including using films and mirror spray paint but nothing we were confident enough with to bring to market.

In may this year I made my annual trip to Clerkenwell Design Week, this festival of design is always a great place for inspiration and new ideas as many creative businesses come to exhibit their latest interior products such as furniture, surfaces and lighting.

My journey around Clerkenwell led me to the house of detention an eeire underground maze that is supposedly haunted. There were many people exhibiting in what i imagine used to be the cells of inmates. Here i met with an extremely talented designer who used Verre Églomisé to create decorative mirrored products using silver and gold leaf.

Together we developed a product that is not only a beautiful handmade antique mirror finish but it is also applied to the rear of toughened glass so suitable behind a heat source.

To keep things simple we have just 3 designs so far, but will develop more as things progress and we supply more. Each of the designs can be tweaked to create less of more of the mirror and we are also able to add colour and designs too.

The Video below shows our 3 antique mirror finishes, these can be made to any size for all kinds of uses.
